22. Venus

Venus is a goddess principally associated with love, beauty, fertility, sex and sexual seduction. She played a key role in many festivals and myths of Rome.

The noun form Venus means “love” and “sexual desire” and has connections to venerari (to honor, to try to please) and venia (grace, favor).

Venus’ name might embody the function of honors and gifts to the divine when seeking their favors: such acts can be interpreted as the enticement, seduction or charm of gods by mortals.

Venus was commonly associated with the Greek goddess Aphrodite. As with most other Roman gods and goddesses, the literary concept of Venus is mantled in whole-cloth borrowings Aphrodite.

In some Latin mythology Cupid was the son of Venus and the god of war-Mars. In other times, Venus was understood to be the Vulcan’s consort.
